At Strengths in Motion – Speech & Occupational Therapy, we love finding creative ways to make learning both fun and purposeful. This week, we kicked off Olympics Week in our Medina, MN clinic, and our young athletes-in-training dove right into the spirit of the games!
Our opening activity was inspired by one of the most iconic symbols of the Olympics—the colorful interlocking rings. We handed out Olympic-rings coloring sheets, and although it may seem like a simple task, coloring is a powerhouse activity for developing multiple developmental skills that are essential for children’s growth.
As our kids worked on their masterpieces, we targeted and strengthened a wide range of areas:
- Basic Concepts: We encouraged color identification and reinforced following color directions, helping children understand and apply concepts like “Use blue for the top ring” or “Color the bottom ring red.” This helps develop early academic readiness skills and supports language comprehension.
- Fine Motor Skills: Holding crayons correctly, applying the right pressure, and maneuvering their fingers to fill in small spaces are all fantastic exercises for improving grip strength, finger dexterity, and overall hand control—skills that are crucial for writing, cutting, and many daily activities.
- Visual Motor Integration: Staying inside the lines requires the brain and eyes to work together with the hands. This coordination is critical not only for artistic activities but also for tasks like handwriting, playing sports, and even dressing independently.
- Attention & Task Completion: Coloring may seem leisurely, but staying focused until a page is complete builds persistence, attention span, and self-regulation—important skills for school success and everyday life.
The beauty of this activity is how naturally it integrates therapy goals without feeling like “work.” Kids are engaged, motivated, and proud of their creations—making learning joyful. By connecting the task to the excitement of the Olympic Games, we tap into a theme that promotes teamwork, perseverance, and celebrating achievements, all of which are core values we encourage in our therapy sessions.
And this is just the beginning! We can’t wait to explore more Olympic-themed activities throughout the week—whether it’s obstacle courses to boost gross motor skills, speech games to promote clear communication, or other interactive projects that challenge both the body and the mind.
At Strengths in Motion, our mission is to help children thrive in their strengths while building the skills they need for everyday success. Olympics Week is a perfect example of how we combine creativity, fun, and purposeful therapy to make progress exciting.
Stay tuned for more updates as we cheer on our young champions toward their personal victories—🥇 every skill gained is a win in our book!
