Turning Setbacks into Success: Building Emotional Regulation and Creative Problem-Solving in Kids

Image of cutting out a new spinner for a board game

At Strengths in Motion – Speech & Occupational Therapy, no challenge is too small to become a valuable learning opportunity. Today, we found ourselves in an unexpected situation: ready and excited to dive into a fun game session with the kids, only to discover that the spinner was missing from the box! While it might have been easy to feel frustrated or let the setback spoil the moment, we saw this as a chance to do something even better—make it a teachable moment.

Instead of giving up, we got creative! Together with the kids, we brainstormed and crafted our very own spinner. What started as a moment of disappointment turned into an exercise in teamwork, problem-solving, and emotional regulation. For children, these small moments of “thinking outside the box” can have a ripple effect on their development, helping them approach challenges in life with patience and creativity.

Why are these experiences so important? For one, learning to manage feelings like frustration or disappointment helps children build emotional resilience. When they see that setbacks don’t have to stop them—and might even lead to something fun and rewarding—they gain confidence in their ability to handle future obstacles. Secondly, opportunities to think creatively and solve problems nurture a child’s cognitive flexibility and critical thinking skills, both essential tools for life.

At Strengths in Motion, we celebrate every challenge, big or small, as a chance to grow. By encouraging children to reframe obstacles as opportunities, we help them lay the foundation for resilience, adaptability, and success. After all, it’s not just about playing a game—it’s about developing the emotional and cognitive skills that will carry them through life’s adventures. And today? We all learned that creativity and perseverance can turn a missing spinner into a win! 🌀✨
